Season pass
Expansion pass
A season pass is an add-on bundle for one game that you buy in advance and that includes downloadable content already out plus content the publisher will release later.
A season pass is a bundle of DLC sold as one product. What sets it apart from an ordinary bundle is time: it covers add-ons for a single game over a period after launch, and part of what it includes may not be released, or even announced, when you pay.
Microsoft’s documentation for developers publishing on Xbox and the Microsoft Store describes it this way, and lists typical uses: the first 12 months of planned DLC at a discounted price, early access to new characters or maps, or rewards tied to a set period. It tells publishers to include at least one item in the pass at release, and to describe upcoming content plainly, for example “includes the first three story expansions”. When a new item is added, owners of the pass receive it automatically, though a large download may still need to be started by hand.
The appeal for the buyer is price or exclusives: the pass usually costs less than the add-ons bought one by one, or adds items you cannot get otherwise. The risk is the same as with any prepayment. You are paying for plans, and the contents are only as defined as the store description says. Before buying, read that description for what is actually named, and whether any of it is already out.
A season pass is different from a battle pass. A season pass buys add-ons for a game; a battle pass is an in-game reward track that you progress through by playing during a season.
