Switch 2 backward compatibility: what carries over from Switch?

Which Switch games, accessories, saves and subscriptions work on Nintendo Switch 2, what needs the old Joy-Con, and what does not carry over at all.

Published 8 min read

In short

Nintendo Switch 2 plays compatible Nintendo Switch games, physical and digital, but Nintendo says some games may not be supported or fully compatible because the hardware is different, and it asks buyers to check each game's status first.

Original Joy-Con and the Pro Controller work wirelessly; the old dock, the old HDMI cable and ordinary microSD cards for storing games do not. A handful of games, such as Ring Fit Adventure and 1-2-Switch, need the original Joy-Con.

Digital games, save data, settings, the Nintendo Account, eShop funds and a Nintendo Switch Online membership all move to Switch 2 through System Transfer and the account itself.

Moving from a Nintendo Switch to a Switch 2 raises a practical list of questions: which games will run, which controllers and accessories still work, and what happens to saves, digital purchases and a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo has answered most of them on its support and product pages. This guide collects those answers in one place. Where Nintendo says a detail depends on the game, so do we. The details below are as Nintendo’s US pages stated them on September 30, 2026. Nintendo says compatibility can change as testing and updates continue, so a game’s status today may improve later.

Does Switch 2 play Switch games?

Yes, with a caveat that Nintendo repeats on every page about it. Switch 2 can play compatible Nintendo Switch games, both physical cartridges and digital downloads. But its hardware differs from the Switch, and Nintendo says some Switch games may not be supported on Switch 2 or may not be fully compatible.

Nintendo describes three ways a game can fall short: it may take longer to become playable, it may work with some features missing, or it may not be supported. It adds that testing and updates may increase the number of supported games over time, and that it is working with other publishers on their games.

Check before you buy. Nintendo asks you to look up a Switch game’s status before buying it to play on Switch 2, and before buying a Switch 2 to keep playing your existing games. There are two places to do that: Nintendo’s compatibility search, which covers physical and digital versions, and each Switch game’s page on Nintendo’s site. For a game from another publisher, Nintendo’s support page says to contact that publisher.

Can Switch games run better on Switch 2?

Some can, in two different ways.

  • Free updates. Connected to the internet, Switch 2 can download free updates for selected Switch games. Nintendo says these may improve performance or add support for Switch 2 features such as GameShare, and what they do differs from game to game.
  • Paid Nintendo Switch 2 Editions. Selected Switch games can be upgraded to a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition for a fee. Nintendo mentions improved image quality, smoother frame rates, and in some games extra features and modes; again, the content varies by game.

Neither applies to every game, so check the game’s page for which, if any, it offers.

Which games need the original Joy-Con?

The Joy-Con 2 controllers that come with Switch 2 differ from the originals, and a small group of games depend on what the old ones had. Nintendo lists them.

Game What is different on Switch 2 What to do
Ring Fit Adventure Joy-Con 2 cannot attach to the Ring-Con or fit the leg strap Attach original Joy-Con to the Ring-Con
1-2-Switch Joy-Con 2 have no IR motion camera Connect an original Joy-Con (R) wirelessly
Everybody 1-2-Switch! Joy-Con 2 vibration is quieter, so Joy-Con Hide & Seek is harder Nintendo notes the difference; no fix listed
Game Builder Garage IR Motion Camera and IR-Light Nodon need the IR camera Connect an original Joy-Con (R)
Nintendo Switch Sports Joy-Con 2 do not fit the leg strap for Soccer Shoot-Out Use an original Joy-Con for that mode
WarioWare: Move It! Microgames using the IR camera need it Connect an original Joy-Con (R)
Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 01: Variety Kit Switch 2 console does not fit the Fishing Rod, Motorbike, Piano or House, and the RC Car antenna cannot attach Original Joy-Con work with the Toy-Con, but the experience differs
Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 02: Robot Kit Joy-Con 2 cannot attach to the Robot Use original Joy-Con
Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 03: Vehicle Kit Switch 2 console does not fit the screen stand Original Joy-Con work with the Toy-Con, but the experience differs

One practical catch: original Joy-Con cannot attach to the Switch 2 console, so they cannot charge on it. You need a Switch console or an accessory such as the Joy-Con charging grip or the Joy-Con charging stand (two-way).

Can I use old controllers with new Switch 2 games?

Mostly, yes. Nintendo says Switch controllers, the Pro Controller and original Joy-Con, also work with games made only for Switch 2, with one exception: they cannot be used when a game needs something only Joy-Con 2 have, such as mouse controls.

Nintendo lists two smaller differences worth knowing before you rely on older pads:

  • the HOME button on a Switch controller does not wake a Switch 2 from sleep mode;
  • GameChat, Switch 2’s voice and video chat, normally starts from the C button on Joy-Con 2. On controllers without a C button, you start it from the HOME Menu instead.

So a spare Pro Controller or an extra pair of original Joy-Con remains useful for local multiplayer, as long as the game does not depend on Joy-Con 2 features.

Which accessories work on Switch 2?

Nintendo’s support page goes through its own accessories one by one.

Accessory Works on Switch 2? Notes from Nintendo
Joy-Con Yes, wirelessly Cannot attach or charge on Switch 2
Nintendo Switch Pro Controller Yes, wirelessly Charges from the Switch 2 dock via USB
NES, SNES, Nintendo 64 and SEGA Genesis controllers Yes, wirelessly, with compatible games The NES controller charges only on a Switch or a compatible accessory; the others charge from the Switch 2 dock via USB
GameCube Controller Adapter Yes In TV mode, through a USB port on the Switch 2 dock
Nintendo Switch dock No Not compatible
Nintendo Switch AC adapter Partly Cannot power TV mode; can charge the console when plugged in directly
HDMI cable from the Switch box No Different HDMI standard; use the cable that comes with Switch 2
microSD cards Not for games Switch 2 uses microSD Express cards; ordinary microSD only for viewing Switch screenshots and videos
Adjustable Charging Stand for Switch No Not compatible
Joy-Con strap, grip, charging grip, wheel, AA battery pack, charging stand (two-way) Not with Joy-Con 2 Only with original Joy-Con used wirelessly
Leg strap and Ring-Con Not with Joy-Con 2 Work with original Joy-Con in Switch Sports and Ring Fit Adventure

The microSD line matters if you keep games on a card. Nintendo says Switch 2 is designed exclusively for microSD Express cards, which transfer data faster, and that an ordinary microSD card can be used on it only to view screenshots and videos captured on a Switch.

What happens to my saves and digital games?

Nintendo’s System Transfer moves them. According to Nintendo:

  • your purchased digital Switch games and their save data are transferred, and the games redownload automatically once the transfer is done;
  • parental controls and other settings come across as they were, although GameChat settings need to be set up;
  • you need an internet connection, and at least one user profile on the old Switch linked to a Nintendo Account.

User profiles and their linked Nintendo Accounts can also be transferred.

What about the eShop, my funds and Nintendo Switch Online?

These belong to your Nintendo Account, not to the console.

  • eShop funds are shared across every Switch and Switch 2 your account is linked to, and eShop cards and compatible download codes can be redeemed on either.
  • Nintendo Switch Online works on any linked Switch or Switch 2, so an existing membership carries on. Some features are exclusive to Switch 2: GameChat, and the Nintendo GameCube classics, which need the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership.
  • Virtual game cards let you manage compatible digital games and DLC across two consoles at a time, and a Switch 2 can be linked with a Switch so a game can be loaded on one or the other. Compatible cards can also be lent to members of your family group.

Can I share games between Switch and Switch 2?

With GameShare, a Switch 2 can share supported games with people who do not own them. A Switch 2 can share with other Switch 2 consoles and with Switch consoles, but a Switch can only receive games shared locally from a Switch 2. The Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app also works with Switch 2, with added controls for GameChat and video chat.

A checklist before you move

  1. Look up each Switch game you care about in Nintendo’s compatibility search.
  2. Keep your original Joy-Con if you play Ring Fit Adventure, 1-2-Switch, WarioWare: Move It! or Nintendo Labo.
  3. Budget for a microSD Express card if you store games on a card.
  4. Keep the old Switch or a charging grip if you will use original Joy-Con.
  5. Run System Transfer with an internet connection and a Nintendo Account linked to a profile on the old Switch.
  6. Check whether your favourite games offer a free update or a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition.

Questions

Can Nintendo Switch 2 play all Switch games?
No. It plays compatible Switch games, both cartridges and downloads, but Nintendo says some may not be supported or fully compatible, may take longer to become playable, or may work only partly. Nintendo's compatibility search and each game's page show the status.
Do my old Joy-Con work with Switch 2?
Yes, paired wirelessly. They cannot attach to the Switch 2 console and must be charged with a Switch console or an accessory such as a Joy-Con charging grip. Some games, like Ring Fit Adventure and 1-2-Switch, need them.
Can I use my Switch microSD card in Switch 2?
Not for games. Switch 2 is designed for microSD Express cards; an ordinary microSD card can only be used to view screenshots and videos captured on a Switch.
Do I need to buy Nintendo Switch Online again?
No. A membership belongs to your Nintendo Account and works on any linked Switch or Switch 2, although some features, such as the GameCube classics, are Switch 2 only and need the Expansion Pack.
Do Switch games run better on Switch 2?
Some do. Nintendo says selected Switch games get free updates that may improve performance or add features on Switch 2, and some can be upgraded to a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition with a paid upgrade.
