NBA The Run, Play by Play Studios’ 3v3 streetball game, has started its first season. The update, called Wave One – 2000s Legends, went live on Xbox Series X|S on September 29, 2026, and is free for all players, according to the studio’s post on Xbox Wire by Ray Almeda of Play by Play Studios.

Five legends from the 2000s

The headline addition is five retired NBA players: Allen Iverson, Kevin Garnett, Vince Carter, Tracy McGrady and Dirk Nowitzki. Each can be unlocked for 5,000 Cred, the in-game currency earned by playing. Players who want all five at once can buy them together as DLC for $9.99 in the Microsoft Store.

What else is in Season 1

  • Championship Belts, a new set of progression challenges.
  • Practice mode and custom matches: single-round games against the CPU, or online with up to five friends.
  • Two new camera options, Drive Cam and Drive Flip Cam, meant to give a better view of the court.
  • New courts: Dyckman, in day and tournament versions, and Spring Garden Elementary.
  • Run Anthems, a playlist of 11 licensed tracks from 2000s artists.
  • Gameplay changes: new layups, dunks and alley-oops, much less goaltending, plus new taunts, badges and alternate jerseys.

What comes next

The studio says a campaign mode is currently targeted for spring 2027. It did not give a firmer date. The full list of changes is in the studio’s post on Xbox Wire.
