Is Xbox Game Pass worth it in 2026? What each plan includes

Essential, Premium, Ultimate and PC Game Pass side by side: prices, libraries, day-one games, cloud hours and what you lose when you cancel.

Published 9 min read

In short

Xbox Game Pass has four plans in the US: Essential at $9.99 a month, Premium at $14.99, Ultimate at $22.99 and PC Game Pass at $13.99, according to Xbox's plan page on September 30, 2026.

The plans differ in library size (50+, 200+, 500+ and 300+ games), in whether new games arrive on release day, in monthly cloud playtime and in partner services such as EA Play; Ultimate and PC Game Pass get new games on day one, except Call of Duty.

Whether a plan pays off depends on how many new releases you would otherwise buy, whether you play on console, PC or both, and whether you need online console multiplayer, which every console plan includes.

Xbox Game Pass is Microsoft’s game subscription. Since October 2025 it has come in three plans for console and PC, Essential, Premium and Ultimate, plus a separate PC-only plan. The prices moved again in April 2026. This guide lays out what each plan includes, what the differences mean in practice, and how to work out whether one pays for itself for you. All figures are from Xbox’s own pages as they stood on September 30, 2026; Microsoft notes that games, features and prices vary by region and change over time.

What are the Xbox Game Pass plans and prices?

Essential and Premium have promotional first-period offers for new subscribers at the time of writing; after the offer, the plan continues at the regular price until you cancel. Microsoft can raise the price with at least 30 days’ notice.

What changed in 2025 and 2026?

Two changes explain most of the confusion around Game Pass.

October 2025: new plan names. Essential and Premium replaced Game Pass Core and Game Pass Standard. Core subscribers moved to Essential and Standard subscribers to Premium automatically; Ultimate kept its name. Xbox Live Gold is no longer sold; its subscribers were moved to what is now Essential. Game Pass for Console is closed to new subscribers, although existing members can keep renewing it; cancel it, and you cannot come back to it.

April 2026: a price cut with a condition. On April 21, 2026, Xbox announced that Ultimate would drop from $29.99 to $22.99 a month and PC Game Pass from $16.49 to $13.99. Existing subscribers see the new price from their next renewal on or after April 22, 2026. In the same announcement, Xbox said future Call of Duty games will no longer join Ultimate or PC Game Pass at launch; they will be added during the following holiday season, about a year later. Call of Duty games already in the library stay.

What does “day one” mean in Game Pass?

A day-one game is added to the library on the day it goes on sale, so a subscriber can play it without buying it. On the current plans:

  • Ultimate and PC Game Pass get new Xbox-published games and selected third-party games on release day, with Call of Duty excluded.
  • Premium gets new Xbox-published games within 12 months of their launch, not on day one.
  • Essential has a smaller, fixed library and no day-one games.

For many players this line is the whole decision. If you would buy two or three new releases a year at full price, the gap between Premium and Ultimate is easy to measure against the price of those games.

How does cloud gaming differ between plans?

Cloud gaming streams a game from Microsoft’s servers, so you can play on a phone, tablet, smart TV, VR headset or browser without downloading it. All three console plans include it, with a monthly allowance on Xbox’s plan page: 5 hours on Essential, 10 on Premium and 15 on Ultimate. PC Game Pass does not include cloud gaming.

The quality differs too. Xbox’s support FAQ says Ultimate can stream supported games at up to 1440p, at a bitrate of up to 30 Mbps, while Premium and Essential stream at 1080p at 15 Mbps. 1440p is not available in Argentina, Brazil or India, on Xbox One consoles or on some smart TVs. When servers are busy, Ultimate members wait the least, then Premium, then Essential.

Cloud plans can also stream selected games you own that are not in Game Pass.

What happens when a game leaves Game Pass or I cancel?

Game Pass is access, not ownership. According to Xbox’s FAQ:

  • when a game leaves the library, or your subscription ends, you can no longer play it unless you buy it;
  • games you bought, and any DLC or add-ons you bought for library games, remain yours;
  • your progress is saved in the cloud, so if you buy the game later, or it returns to the library, you continue where you stopped.

Members get a discount on most games in the library. Xbox says there is no discount in a game’s first month after release, a small one may apply in its second and third months, and a larger one after three months.

What do EA Play, Ubisoft+ Classics, Fortnite Crew and Rewards add?

Ultimate bundles three services that are also sold on their own, and the value of the plan depends heavily on whether you would use them.

  • EA Play, in Ultimate and PC Game Pass, is Electronic Arts’ library: Xbox names series such as EA SPORTS FC, The Sims and Star Wars, plus trials of selected new EA games.
  • Ubisoft+ Classics, in Ultimate only, adds 50+ Ubisoft games from its older catalogue.
  • Fortnite Crew, in Ultimate only, gives the current Battle Pass, OG Pass, LEGO Pass, Music Pass and Rocket Pass Premium in Fortnite, plus a monthly allowance of V-Bucks.

Every plan also includes in-game benefits in games such as League of Legends, Call of Duty: Warzone and Rainbow Six Siege, and member deals in the Microsoft Store.

Rewards are points you earn by playing and buying, spent in the Microsoft Store. The multiplier rises with the plan: Premium earns twice the Essential rate and Ultimate four times. Xbox’s comparison page says Ultimate members can get up to $100 a year in Store value from playing, and up to 10% back in points on eligible Game Pass library purchases; for Premium the figures are up to $50 a year and up to 5%. Rewards have their own terms, vary by market, and gameplay rewards are for adults only.

How do I see which games are in the library?

The list changes every month, so check it before choosing a plan for a particular game. Xbox’s FAQ gives four places to look: the Game Pass collection on xbox.com, My games & apps > Full library > Game Pass on a console, the Xbox app on a Windows 10 or 11 PC, and the Game Pass tab in the Xbox mobile app, which can also start a download on your console remotely. For PC games, the game’s page shows its system requirements and the storage it needs.

Xbox Game Studios games are not free through Game Pass on other PC stores such as Steam; the subscription works through the Xbox app.

Do I need Game Pass for online multiplayer?

On an Xbox console, online multiplayer in paid games requires a Game Pass subscription, and every console plan, from Essential up, includes it. Free-to-play games such as Fortnite and Roblox can be played online without one. On Windows PCs, online multiplayer needs no subscription at all.

Can the family share one subscription?

On console, yes. If you set a console as your home Xbox, every profile on that console can use your Game Pass games and benefits, even when you are not signed in. This works on Essential, Premium and Ultimate. You can change your home Xbox up to five times a year. On Windows PCs, Game Pass is tied to one Microsoft account, so each person needs their own subscription.

How do I work out whether Game Pass is worth it for me?

Xbox does not publish a formula, and neither will we. What decides it is your own buying pattern. A few questions narrow it down quickly:

  1. Do you play on console, PC or both? If only on PC, compare PC Game Pass at $13.99 with Ultimate at $22.99: Ultimate adds console play, cloud gaming, Ubisoft+ Classics and Fortnite Crew.
  2. How many new releases would you buy in a year? Day-one access is only in Ultimate and PC Game Pass. If you mostly play older games, Premium’s 200+ library may cover you.
  3. Do you need online multiplayer on console? Then you need at least Essential anyway, and the question becomes how much more to pay on top of it.
  4. Do you already pay for EA Play, Ubisoft+ Classics or Fortnite Crew? Ultimate includes all three, which changes the comparison if you would otherwise buy them separately.
  5. Will you use cloud gaming away from your console? The monthly hours rise with each plan.

Keep in mind that the library changes every month. A game you subscribe to play can leave, and the discount is the way to keep it.

How do I cancel, and can I get a refund?

You can cancel at any time, on the console under Profile & system > Settings > Account > Subscriptions, or on the web at account.microsoft.com/services. Turning off recurring billing stops future charges, and you keep the benefits until the paid period ends.

Microsoft’s refund policy for Xbox subscriptions allows:

  • a refund if you cancel within 30 days of the first purchase or before the first recurring charge, whichever comes first;
  • a refund of the most recent recurring charge if you cancel within 30 days of paying it, once per Microsoft account per subscription.

Requests outside those processes are not eligible. Prepaid subscription codes bought in a shop follow that shop’s return policy. Some countries, including Canada, France, Germany and Korea, have a legal right to cancel with a prorated refund; the support page lists them.

What about switching plans?

You can move between Ultimate, Premium, Essential and PC Game Pass. When upgrading, prepaid time from other Xbox subscriptions is converted, with caps: up to 13 months can be applied to Premium and up to 36 months to Ultimate. Anything over the cap is lost, and conversions cannot be reversed, so check the total before redeeming a code.

Questions

How much is Xbox Game Pass Ultimate in 2026?
$22.99 a month in the US. Xbox cut it from $29.99 on April 21, 2026; existing subscribers moved to the new price from their next renewal on or after April 22, 2026. Prices vary by region.
Which Game Pass plans get new games on release day?
Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Premium gets new Xbox-published games within 12 months of launch, and Essential does not get day-one games. Call of Duty is excluded from day-one releases.
Do I need Game Pass to play online on Xbox?
On Xbox consoles, yes, for paid games: every Game Pass plan except PC Game Pass includes online console multiplayer. Free-to-play games such as Fortnite do not need a subscription, and online play on Windows PCs needs none.
What happens to my games if I cancel Game Pass?
You lose access to library games you have not bought. Games, add-ons and DLC you bought stay yours, and saves are kept in the cloud, so you can continue if you buy the game later.
Can I get a refund on Game Pass?
Microsoft refunds a subscription cancelled within 30 days of the first purchase or before the first renewal, whichever is sooner, and the most recent renewal once per account per subscription if you cancel within 30 days of paying. Codes bought in shops follow the shop's policy.
