PS Plus Essential vs Extra vs Premium: what's the difference?

The three PlayStation Plus plans compared: US prices for 1, 3 and 12 months, what each adds, cloud streaming, and what happens when you stop paying.

Published 9 min read

In short

PlayStation Plus comes in three plans. Essential covers monthly games, online multiplayer, discounts and cloud saves; Extra adds the Game Catalog of hundreds of games and Ubisoft+ Classics; Premium adds the Classics Catalog, Game Trials, PS5 cloud streaming and the Sony Pictures Catalog.

On Sony's US page on September 30, 2026, the monthly prices were $10.99 for Essential, $16.99 for Extra and $19.99 for Premium, with cheaper 12-month plans at $79.99, $134.99 and $159.99.

Games from PS Plus are playable only while your membership is active, and you need at least Essential to play most paid games online on PS5 and PS4.

PlayStation Plus is Sony’s subscription for PS5 and PS4. It has three plans, Essential, Extra and Premium, each containing everything in the plan below it plus more. The names are simple; what trips people up is which benefit sits in which plan, and what you keep when you stop paying. This guide goes through both, using Sony’s own pages as they stood on September 30, 2026. Sony notes that the games and features vary over time, by plan and by country.

What does each PS Plus plan include?

Benefit Essential Extra Premium
Monthly games to claim Yes Yes Yes
Online multiplayer Yes Yes Yes
Member discounts and exclusive content packs Yes Yes Yes
Cloud storage for saves Yes Yes Yes
Share Play Yes Yes Yes
Game Catalog (hundreds of games) No Yes Yes
Ubisoft+ Classics No Yes Yes
Classics Catalog (games from PlayStation history) No No Yes
Game Trials No No Yes
PS5 cloud streaming No No Yes
Sony Pictures Catalog (up to 100 films) No No Yes

Essential is the entry plan: a set of monthly games you add to your library, online play, members’ prices in PlayStation Store, cloud backups of your saves so you can download them on another console, and Share Play, which lets a friend join your game or take the controller from their own console.

Extra adds the Game Catalog, an on-demand library of hundreds of games you can download and play while you are a member, and Ubisoft+ Classics, a selection of Ubisoft games that Sony values at $7.99 a month.

Premium adds four things on top: the Classics Catalog of older PlayStation games, Game Trials that let you try some new games before buying, PS5 cloud streaming, and the Sony Pictures Catalog of up to 100 films at no extra cost.

How much does PS Plus cost?

Sony sells each plan for one, three or twelve months. The US prices on its PlayStation Plus page on September 30, 2026:

Plan 1 month 3 months 12 months
Essential $10.99 $27.99 $79.99
Extra $16.99 $43.99 $134.99
Premium $19.99 $54.99 $159.99

The 12-month plans are where the saving is. Sony labels the annual Essential plan “39% off” compared with paying monthly, and the annual Extra and Premium plans “33% off”. Membership renews automatically at the then-current PlayStation Store price, at the interval you picked, until you cancel.

Prices vary by country, and Sony changes them from time to time. Check the price on your own account before you subscribe.

Are PS Plus games mine to keep?

Only while you pay. Sony’s FAQ says PS Plus games are yours to play for as long as you remain an active member, and the PS Plus Usage Terms say games downloaded through the service are playable only while you have a valid subscription. If your membership lapses, you also lose the use of add-ons and in-game items tied to those games until you renew or buy the game.

That applies to all three kinds of PS Plus game:

  • Monthly games are added at the start of each month. Once you add one to your library, you can download and play it at any time while your membership is active.
  • Game Catalog games can leave the service. Sony says games with end dates are announced ahead of time.
  • Classics Catalog games work the same way.

If you buy a game you have been playing through PS Plus, it becomes yours in the ordinary way, along with any DLC you then use with it.

How often are PS Plus games updated?

Every month, across all three plans: Sony says the monthly games change at the beginning of each month and new titles are added to the Game Catalog regularly. Its PS Plus games page lists what is available now. PS5 games in the catalog can only be downloaded to a PS5. Because the Game Catalog changes, check that a game you want is there, and not about to leave, before paying for Extra or Premium for its sake.

How does PS Plus Premium cloud streaming work?

Cloud gaming on PlayStation is a Premium benefit. According to Sony’s cloud streaming page:

  • you can stream selected PS5 games from the Game Catalog and Classics Catalog, and selected PS5 games you own, to a PS5 console or a PlayStation Portal;
  • a session needs at least 5 Mbps upload and download;
  • Sony recommends 52 Mbps for 2160p (4K), 38 Mbps for 1440p, 23 Mbps for 1080p and 13 Mbps for 720p;
  • the feature is not available for child accounts, and only selected games can be streamed.

Streaming saves the download and the console’s storage, at the cost of depending on your connection. It is available only in listed countries: the US, Canada, Japan, the UK, Norway, Switzerland and 24 EU countries.

Premium’s plan list also mentions streaming games from the Game Catalog and hundreds of PS3 and PS2 games from the Classics Catalog; Sony’s games page says the PS3 classics are available by streaming only.

Do I need PS Plus to play online?

For most paid games, yes. Sony’s FAQ says that for most games bought on disc or from PlayStation Store, playing online requires a PS Plus membership, and every plan, including Essential, provides it. Most free-to-play games, Sony names Fortnite, Apex Legends and Call of Duty: Warzone, can be played online without one.

What do the member discounts and content packs give?

Every plan gets two smaller benefits that are easy to overlook.

  • Exclusive discounts. Sony says members get deals on selected games, add-ons and pre-orders in PlayStation Store, and often an extra saving on top of a game that is already on sale. The size of the discount is not fixed; it is shown on the store page.
  • Exclusive content. Members can claim content packs for selected free-to-play games at no extra cost.

Neither is a reason to subscribe on its own, but if you already buy games in PlayStation Store sales, the member price can offset part of an Essential membership.

How does PS Plus compare with Xbox Game Pass?

The two services are built differently, so a straight price comparison misleads. Our guide to Xbox Game Pass plans has the full details; the main differences on the companies’ own pages in September 2026 are these.

Feature PlayStation Plus Xbox Game Pass
Entry plan for online console play Essential, $10.99 a month Essential, $9.99 a month
Top plan, monthly Premium, $19.99 Ultimate, $22.99
New games on release day Not listed among the benefits Ultimate and PC Game Pass
Cloud streaming Premium only All three console plans, with monthly hour limits
Longer-term discount 12-month plans Not listed on the plan page

The biggest practical difference is day-one releases: Game Pass Ultimate adds new Xbox-published games on launch day, and Sony’s PS Plus pages do not list release-day access among the benefits; Premium’s Game Trials offer limited-time access to selected games instead. PlayStation’s annual plans, on the other hand, bring the cost down for anyone willing to pay for a year at once.

How do I choose between Essential, Extra and Premium?

Sony’s pages don’t say which plan is right for you, and there is no single answer. These questions settle it for most people:

  1. Do you mostly play online with friends in paid games? Essential covers that, plus the monthly games.
  2. Do you finish several games a year that you would not buy at full price? That is what the Game Catalog in Extra is for. Browse it first: the value is only as good as the games in it that you want.
  3. Do you want older PlayStation games or to try new releases before buying? The Classics Catalog and Game Trials are only in Premium.
  4. Do you have a PlayStation Portal or limited console storage? Cloud streaming is a Premium feature.
  5. Can you commit for a year? The 12-month plans cost markedly less than 12 monthly payments.

How do I upgrade, downgrade or cancel?

Plans are managed in Account Settings > Subscriptions Management on PS5 or PS4, or in Subscriptions Management on the web. Sony says a downgrade takes effect at the end of the period you have already paid for, and you lose the higher plan’s benefits then.

Old PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now vouchers still work, but not always one-for-one. If you have no membership, a PS Plus voucher gives Essential for the stated length. If you already have a membership, a voucher is converted into time on your current plan by its money value, so a one-month PS Plus voucher gives about three weeks of Extra.

To stop paying, turn off automatic renewal in your subscription payment settings. That stops future charges but does not refund payments already made.

Can I get a refund on PS Plus?

Sony’s PlayStation Store cancellation policy lets you cancel a subscription and ask for a refund within 14 days of the first purchase, even if you have already used it. The refund may be reduced in proportion to the use you have had. If you started with a free trial, the 14 days begin when the trial order is accepted, and the trial days count toward them.

Games and add-ons bought from PlayStation Store follow a different rule: they can be cancelled within 14 days only if you have not started downloading or streaming them.
